Details of Practice

The Medical Art Practice

Dr Isabelle Martineau, MD, MBSBM, LFHom,  graduated as a medical doctor in Paris at the University of Pierre et Marie Curie in the ‘hospital Saint Antoine’. She trained and qualified in the specialty of ENDOCRINOLOGY , METABOLIC DISEASES and NUTRITION.

Over the past years Dr Isabelle Martineau decided to integrate more NATUROPATHIC NUTRITION in her medical treatments. While embarking on this more integrative approach she discovered the BIOREGULATORY Medicine group ( BRM) practised in different countries such as Germany, Canada, Australia and Mexico, and the Institute for FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ( IFM) orignially started in the USA.

WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE AND BIOREGULATORY MEDICINE?

These two complementary approaches search for the underlying causes of symptoms rather than simply treating the symptoms alone. BioRegulatory Medicine and Functional Medicine bring tools which go to the root cause of the illness to bring resolution of the disease.

Searching for the root cause does not mean looking only for the physiological signs and chemical or hormonal imbalances but also taking account of mental state and past psychological events as the PSYCHO-NEURO- ENDOCRINO-IMMUNO (PNEI) systems are strongly linked together.

Bioregulatory medicine goes one step further as it also integrates in the treatment: homeopathy, acupuncture, deep tissue massage and structural care: a concert of different therapeutic approaches playing in harmony to create a symphony of wellness.

HOW DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE WORK?

It digs into the cellular level to restore homeostasis (biochemical equilibrium within the cells). It pays careful attention for example to toxic overload, proposing detoxification of the gastro-intestinal system and the liver, in order to regenerate the tissues and boost the energy of the systems. It allows the physician to modulate in a more refined way the body response to any aggressions whether infectious, inflammatory or psychologicaly stressful. It therefore demands a more in-depth medical history looking for genetic susceptibility, biochemical disruption, stress accumulation, hormonal imbalance, toxicity overload, unresolved psychological issues and unhealthy lifestyle habits among which the western diet is a big part.

WHICH DISEASES CAN BE IMPROVED BY FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE AND NUTRITION?

Our unhealthy lifestyle has recently led to an increase of a chronic state of inflammation in the body including the main 20th century illnesses such as cardio-vascular disease, diabesity (Diabetes Type 2 induced by obesity), metabolic syndrome, IBS, cancer, auto immune diseases, eczema, womens health / hormonal issues, PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), muscular and joint problems and associated pain, burn-out, chronic fatigue syndrome, dementia and Alzheimer's diesease; many of these 'dis-eases' result from basic physiological homeostatic disruption in the first place; as well as intestinal permeability (leaky gut) associated to dysbiosis (unhealthy microbiome / bacteria of the gut).

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE MEDICAL ART PRACTICE

1 - First a lifestyle and diet questionaire is sent to the patient and he/she is expected to have filled it in.

2 - The first consultation can last upto 1.5 hours to 2 hours as the history of the patient is key to understand the triggers and drivers of the illness. Previous medical reports and laboratory results are always helpful.

3 - Physical examination can be done depending on the condition.

4 - Further laboratory tests may be needed. Usually, if accepted by your GP, the most cost effective way is to do it with the NHS, otherwise private laboratories.

5 - Dietary recommendations are suggested and it may include supplements, as the first line of treatment is mainly nutrition, lifestyle and homeopathy.  Unless a condition that needs further hospital investigations is detected as we work closely with conventional doctors.

6 - The follow-up can vary from every 2 weeks to every 6 weeks until improvement / restoration of the wellness of the patient.

At the Medical Art Practice, medicine is performed with personalised care in a patient centred way where the doctor and her patient form a team which empower the patient through education, awareness , consciouness of the body and mindfulness .

“HEALTH IS NOT ABOUT BIOLOGICAL EQUATIONS TO BE SOLVED, IT IS ABOUT VIBRANT HARMONIES TO BE FULLY BALANCED, EXPERIENCED AND LOVED” Dr Isabelle Martineau.
